THE GOOD NEIGHBOR INITIATIVE
While working as the Marketing Coordinator at Trellis, I got to plan events...and promote them. As a community development organization, we wanted to create an event that celebrated community and encouraged people to interact with their neighborhood. And with that, "The Good Neighbor Initiative" was born.
Here's how the initiative (which now happens every year!) works:
- We asked 12 local artists to decorate a bench -- there was one restriction: it must somehow celebrate community.
- Nominate your neighbor! We asked the community through social and earned media to nominate a neighbor to win one of our benches.
- A kickoff art show followed with the benches on display at a gallery.
- Tweet, tweet! To encourage attendance, we tacked on a twitter contest. Describe what makes a Good Neighbor for a chance to win a bench made by a local blacksmith.
- Each month, we gave away a bench to deserving neighbors throughout the community. Even mayors and local news stations attended!
